With such a hilariously hardcore album title as Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, you might expect something more loud and pounding like their previous release The Hawk Is Howling. Instead, they have built a solid album that reaches from dense to delicate without sounding like they are overreaching. The lack of conventional song structure and less anthemic songs prove that the band is continually evolving, providing an accessible album to new listeners without losing that Mogwai sound longtime fans demand. This can be heard on tracks such as “You’re Lionel Richie,” in which there is the traditional brief moment of silence just before the four minute mark setting you up for the roar of every instrument simultaneously crushing you. One can also expect slower more sultry songs such as “Letters To The Metro,” as well as thick layers of noise heard on tracks like “Rano Pano.” If they continue releasing albums as powerful as this they should think about changing the album title, replacing the word Hardcore with Mogwai.
