Five years ago, a reviewer (if they knew their grammar) might have started out a write-up on the Milwaukee-based Signaldrift by saying “Signaldrift is Franz Buchholz.” Switch back to the present, with the release of the new album Two Agents and hopefully the reviewer now says “Signaldrift are Franz Buchholz and John Goelzer.” Now this means a lot more than simply that Buchholz gained a member and that the bedroom electronica solo project is now a bedroom electronica duo. This means that everything that was once impressive about Signaldrift (thinking specifically about the remarkable 2005 effort Set Design) is now multiplied by two. Though when listening to any of the new outing’s eight blissed-out beat-driven tracks one can’t necessarily delineate when Buchholz ends and Goelzer begins, it’s clear that there is two humans’ energies and ideas packed densely into every song, and thus pits Signaldrift as not just an enhanced outfit but in many way a completely redesigned and re-purposed one as well. Part heady dance bangers and part headless intimate atmospherics, Two Agents embraces its dualism fully, to the point of giving the listener an eponymous warning about the half 80s-inspired, half space-age soundtrack-inflected vibes that reverberate throughout the one-hour-plus run time, as if to say “watch out, you’re going to get lost.” What’s best though is ain’t that exactly the point? Two sides intertwining and knotting up into each other, then letting go and falling apart, only to press repeat and do the same thing all over again? Sounds like an hour well spent to us.
