DOSH ON MYSPACE
One of the founding principles of Nowlikephotographs is that actions speak louder than words. Needless to say, it was a magical moment for us when Martin Dosh articulated the very same sentiment; in an interview with The Onion‘s AV Club, Dosh said “It’s not that I don’t have anything to say . . . I just feel like the music says whatever I want to say in a better way than I could try to translate into words.” Fortunately, Dosh’s 5th full-length release sounds like an encyclopaedia of mute emotion. “Loud” compliments a solo piano with weepy strings, and tries to convey that over-the-top can be fragile as well. Our vote for song-that-sounds-most-similar-to-marshmallow-clouds-tied-up-with-sunbeams is hands down “Airlift,” which covers a stutter-stop disco beat with bandmate Mike Lewis’ swelling brasswork. Dosh channels his intensity on “Call the Kettle,” an older track finally released in a polished form. Appropriately, the song sounds like it was created by pounding on various kitchen utensils; on Tommy, “Call the Kettle” is the thrashing bull in a china shop. Tommy closes with “Gare de Lyon,” a track meticulously layered that climaxes with galaxy-swallowing distortion. For all his unusual instrumentation and surprising song structures, we still have to ask “Isn’t this what post-rock is supposed to be about?” We’re proud to call Dosh the heart of the Minneapolis instrumental music scene. Keep ‘em coming.
